LASER is defined by pop culture as the light thingie that comes out of a storm trooper’s gun and zaps anything with murderous intent. The real world laser however is actually an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The term laser therefore applies to any device that emits an intense beam of visible or invisible (infrared) light that remains focused over a great distance without dispersing. Laser beams are produced by atoms being pushed together to a higher energy level causing them to simultaneously release energy.
LASER POINTER WAVELENGTH - A wavelength is the span between one peak of a wave of light, heat or other energy form, and the next corresponding peak. The radiation generated by the laser beam of a laser pointer is measured in nanometers (nm).
LASER POINTER POWER OUTPUT - The laser pointer varies in power output, depending on the requirement and application. Measured in milliwatts (mW), the beam of a laser pointer may range from the simple 1mW laser pointer to the 1000mW or 1W power output.
LASER POINTER COLOR - The cheapest and most widely available laser pointer usually come in the deep red colored laser diode near the 670/650 nanometers (nm) wavelength. Throw in a few more cash and you’ll get the red-orange 635 nm diode, which are more visible than their 670 nm counterparts because of the greater sensitivity of the human eye at 635 nm. The 532 nm green laser pointer is likewise available and is the most common laser pointer color alternative. Green Laser Pointer The green laser pointer color became a popular alternative color when it first hit the shelves back in year 2000. A green laser pointer is more complicated to manufacture than the red laser pointer because laser diodes in this wavelength range is not commonly available. Popular among star gazers and astronomy enthusiasts, the beam of a green laser pointer is easily visible even in low power in the night sky. This makes the green laser pointer ideal for pointing out astronomical objects at night.
Blue Laser Pointer One of the more recent laser pointer colors, the blue laser pointer became commercially available in 2006. It has the same basic construction as the green laser pointer. Blue laser beam color lase at 473 nm, which is produced by frequency doubling of 946 nm laser radiation from a diode-pumped Nd:YAG or Nd:YVO4 crystal. 450 nm blue laser diodes are available commercially. The devices are brighter than the 405 nm laser diodes, since the longer wavelength is closer to the peak sensitivity of the human eye.
Red Laser Pointer This laser pointer color is the simplest of all the laser pointers. The pointer is no more than a battery powered laser diode. The first red laser pointer appeared in the early ‘80s and unlike the common laser pointer today, old school laser pointers were huge, bulky and unwieldy not to mention too pricey. Diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) red laser pointers emitting at 671 nm have recently became available creating a higher beam quality and a narrower spectral bandwidth.
Violet Laser Pointer A violet laser beam can be produced with GaN (gallium nitride) semiconductors. Gallium nitride lasers project a violet light beam at 405 nm wavelength (nearly ultraviolet, on the verge of the very extreme of human vision) which can produce bright blue fluorescence (therefore blue rather than violet spot) on white surfaces like white clothing, ordinary white sheet paper and projection screens. A violet laser pointer may also be non GaN based. A laser pointer of this type use DPSS frequency-doubler technology from 1 watt 808 nm GaAlAs infrared diode lasers. A violet laser pointer of this power is powerful enough to pop balloons and light matches, resulting from an unfiltered high-power infrared component in the beam.
Pink Laser Pointer The pink colored laser pointer is a new development. Needless to say of course, that its inner-workings and construction is a tightly guarded secret for now.
